India’s opener Shubman Gill has suffered a serious shin injury which could put him away from cricket for at least two months. Sources in the Cricket Board of India (BCCI) gave this information to PTI on Thursday. It is certain that Gill will miss the opening matches of the five-match Test series against England in Nottingham on August 4.
The source said on condition of anonymity, “Shubman has a shin stress fracture, due to which he will be out for at least two weeks. Due to this, he will not be able to take part in the first three Tests against England in August.
Injury aggravated in WTC finals?
The injury is understood to have aggravated during the recently concluded World Test Championship final against New Zealand in Southampton. India lost this match by eight wickets. A former India fast bowler told PTI, “Shin stress fractures are not very serious but require a lot of rest and rehabilitation.”
no hurry board
He said, “If there was a shin fracture, it could take more than three months to heal but it usually takes eight to 10 weeks to recover from a shin stress fracture injury.” The bowler said, “If Gill’s substitutes, be it Mayank (Agarwal) or KL Rahul, do well, he may have to sit out and I think the team management may also be in no hurry to make him fit for the fifth Test. I don’t want to show.
Abhimanyu Easwaran may get a chance
Abhimanyu Easwaran of Bengal is one of the standby openers. Physio Nitin Patel and strength and conditioning coach Sohan Desai are understood to be monitoring Gill’s progress in England. However, it is not yet clear whether he will stay there once he is officially out of the tour or return home for rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy. The Indian team has just taken a break and will gather in mid-July for the series against England.
