Colombo: Sri Lanka cricket has been battling with problems for the past several months. Many senior cricketers are disappointed with the new contract of the National Cricket Board and have not declared themselves available for national selection. Nothing is going well for Sri Lanka cricket at the moment as the performance of the national team has also not been strong for the last few years. In such a situation, the absence of veteran players is doing the work of sprinkling salt on his wound.
Meanwhile, news has been received that star all-rounder Angelo Mathews is contemplating to retire from international cricket. Matthews, 34, played his last match for Sri Lanka against Bangladesh in April. After this he did not participate in the limited overs series due to different reasons and now it is reported that he is thinking of putting an end to his career.
According to a Newswire report, Matthews has informed Sri Lanka Cricket that he is planning to retire from international cricket. The veteran cricketer is currently looking into the matter and may give his verdict in the coming weeks. It should be noted that Matthews was among several senior players who opposed the new central contract issue over transparency issues.
So it will be interesting to see which way Matthews will go. Let us tell you that Angelo Mathews is one of the best all-rounders of Sri Lanka. The right-handed batsman handles the innings in the middle order and then knows how to bat fast in the final overs. Apart from this, his medium pace balls have also proved to be very effective.
The national selectors named Matthews as the captain on the back of his brilliant performance while Mahela Jayawardene, Kumar Sangakkara and Tillakaratne Dilshan were included in the team. The all-rounder did a great job as the captain as well. However, everything changed in the Sri Lankan team after the veteran trio retired. Sri Lanka were defeated in series one after the other and this increased the pressure on Mathews.
Angelo Mathieu stepped down as the captain in 2017. Till now he has scored 13219 runs and took 191 wickets in 90 Tests, 218 ODIs and 49 T20 Internationals. This figure may not change for a long time now because Angelo Mathews is planning to retire.
