  • Babar Azam is the captain of Pakistan in all three formats
  • He has made his mark with his brilliant batting
  • He has played 33 Tests, 80 ODIs, 54 T20 Internationals

Babar Azam, the captain of the Pakistan team, has made a lot of sense with the bat in the last few years. He has played many wonderful innings. However, former Pakistan captain and veteran bowler Wasim Akram believes that Azam needs to improve the dot ball percentage in T20 cricket. Let us inform that Azam currently has a strike-rate of 129.70 in T20 Internationals. This strike-rate is not bad, but Akram wants Azam to play less dot balls when he starts the innings in T20.

‘Need to learn from top batsmen’

According to media reports, Wasim Akram said, ‘Pakistani batsmen need to see the top batsmen in the world and learn from them how they approach their game. Babar Azam and Rizwan are in good form but I think Babar needs to improve his dot ball percentage in the first six overs. Players need to grow along with playing T20 cricket.

He further said, ‘We have played six seasons of Pakistan Super League (PSL), but can you name a batsman who comes from the emerging category. Haider Ali’s name cropped up but he is not consistent. Hafeez is 40 years old. He is physically very fit and is a part of the team. I am glad he is playing well. However, he is not in form at the moment. Had there been some other good batsman, he would have been replaced, but it is not so.

‘Batting doesn’t mean six off every ball’

Akram also explained how batsmen should play in the shortest format without losing their wickets. He said, ‘Batting does not mean that you have to hit sixes in every ball. For this, you have to choose your target bowler and then the spot. At the same time, you have to examine the situation with full senses. A coach will not tell you about the situation. It comes from the players’ own intelligence and they need to learn that.
