New Delhi: Former national selector Saba Karim recently said that Shubman Gill managed to hide his injury ahead of the World Test Championship final, which he was surprised to learn. Karim said that despite having so many trainers and physios in the Indian team, no one could trace Gill’s injury, which could keep him out of action for almost two months.

While talking in the Khelneeti podcast, Saba Karim said on Shubman Gill’s injury, ‘I am shocked to see that Shubman Gill hid his injury. He has been traveling with the Indian team for a long time. The physio and other medical staff take care of the fitness of the players. It was very surprising how this happened and why it was not known earlier.

Former India all-rounder Nikhil Chopra cited the example that the Indian team did not take Rohit Sharma on the tour of Australia last year as he was injured. Chopra believes that the rules should be the same for everyone and Shubman Gill should be sent back home. Chopra said, “If you can set standards for a senior player like Rohit Sharma, then it applies to other players as well.”

‘Mayank Agarwal was not treated well’

Saba Karim feels that the Indian team management did not do well with Mayank Agarwal. The third Indian to complete 1000 Test runs as the fastest, Mayank was dropped after a poor innings in Australia and was replaced by Shubman Gill.

However, now that Shubman Gill is injured, Karim feels that Mayank Agarwal should be given the first chance for the opener in the series against England along with Rohit Sharma. Saba Karim said, ‘Mayank Agarwal should get priority. He was dropped from the team only after 2-3 bad innings.

Nikhil Chopra also agreed with Saba Karim and said that there is no need to send anyone for the series against England. Chopra said, ‘The players who are in the team should get a chance. Mayank had a great performance in the home series. It would be wrong to call players from India when you already have a batsman. It will set a wrong example.
